The NHS Boys golf team was only able to bring four members to the Union County Invitational and were unable to capitalize on their opponents mistakes and execute their games in shooting a 400, for 8th place out of 10 teams.
“As I told the players, this was a practice round to get ready for the sectional and be relaxed going into next Monday, but I was hoping that they would start to play a little smarter golf today. Liberty GC is a lot like Forest Hills in that if you just hit the ball straight, you’ll be ok. We just don’t necessarily have the discipline to follow the game plan and play small ball. It’s really simple, we need bogey golf for sectional, so we need players to execute by hitting smaller and missing smaller, so some of the players have got to eliminate drivers and not hitting trying to hit every club as hard as we can. That’s not golf. It’s about swinging smoothly and how straight you can hit the ball with more precision. Can we do that? That’s up to the guys,” said coach Haynes.
“The bright spots we have is Jake Shue coming in with an 82 and Taylor Appledorn recovering from a bad front 9 to shoot a 44 on the back 9. If these guys block everything out on the course, parents, players, weather, etc., they can do what we set out to do this year. It’s that simple. It’s just them and the course and they have to want it, love it, and execute it. It’s really that simple,” said Haynes.
