Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. That’s what it felt like in terms of weather conditions, as well as performance by the Northeastern Golf team during Thursday’s match with Centerville at Highland Lakes GC, with Northeastern playing 20 strokes worse than Tuesday’s score, losing 197 to Centerville’s 179. 3 Players tied for a low round with 43, Aaron Glover and Sam Roberts of Centerville, and Jake Shue of Northeastern. Bailey Moistner tied his personal best round at Highland, carding a 44.
“As I told our guys, we aren’t playing opponents, we are playing against the course, and today we played against ourselves. Our top guys came out focused and prepared, but spots 3-5 came out unfocused and played as individuals. We have high expectations for the year and the message we learned today is that we can’t let our emotions win out, that the next shot, even if it was a bad one, is the MOST important one. When you know better and don’t do better, you’re no better. The focus for this team is to play for each other and as a team, and if we do that we have great potential come sectional time. The players just have to believe it and in themselves and practice like you’ve never won, and play like you’ve never lost,” stated Coach Haynes. When asked how the team can rebound, Coach Haynes said simply, “Short term memory for losses and mistakes, long term memory for successes. Mental discipline. That’s the key to golf.”
