Lady Knights Win 4-1 Against Lady Rebels in US 27 Border Battle

By Matt Haynes | Apr 19, 2024 9:00 AM

The Lady Knights overcame a slow start at both doubles positions and #3 singles to win a battle of attrition against the Rebels of Randolph Southern 4-1. "At first it didn't look like we started well, but once we lit the fire we fought back and turned the tables against Randolph Southern. I am very proud of the way we fought back and won 2 three set matches at both the #1 and #2 doubles positions and I am elated for #3 singles player Aubrey Mainous, winning her first match of the season. She was down 3-5 in the first set and rattled off the next 10 games in a row to beat her opponent. She definitely flipped the switch and I hope to see more of that mentality out of her. Couldn't be more proud of the team and the girls for fighting through our mistakes and flipping the script to win the way we did. Things are starting to click for the doubles and singles and it's awesome to see. Now we get a day off to get some much needed practice and instruction outside of a match for tomorrow and then we play 3 matches on Saturday. Hopefully the girls can stay energized for these matches and learn what we can to continue to play better going forward. 8 matches in 7 days is tough, even for professional tennis players," said Coach Haynes. The Knights improve to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in non-conference matches, and 2-0 in the TEC. The Knights play in the Richmond Invitational starting @ 9am this Saturday. Singles play will be held at Tiernan Courts while the Doubles will play at the Earlham Rec Courts just south of the Earlham Wellness Center. Varsity Singles: #1 Lauren Lacey defeated Alexis Stump 6-0, 6-0 #2 Josie Retz lost to Jordan Black 1-6, 2-6 #3 Aubrey Mainous won against Noemi Pelico 7-5, 6-0 Varsity Doubles: #1 Chaia Gardner & Ella Coddington won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 against Brianna Smith & Sophi Chenoweth #2 Alyssa Sheets & Olivia Null won 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 against Joselyn Smith & Kehlan Baker
